Album Review: Moulettes – Moulettes

MoulettesNow this is a tough one. It’s not often you come across an album that sounds like nothing you’ve heard before and with no obvious band references it makes it difficult to subscribe! While I’m thinking about how to do that, let’s backtrack a bit and tell you about the band.

Formed in 2003, they played under the name Hannah, Ruth & Rob (Rob Skinner left to join the Holloways), until after some personnel changes the Moulettes evolved with it’s current lineup of Hannah (cello, vocals), Ruth (bassoon, vocals), Ollie (guitar, drums), Georgina (violin) and Rob (percussion). This choice of instruments should give you a good indication that Moulettes are not your average band!

So, back to the description… blending gypsy folk, classical, jazz and rock to formulate a geniunely unique and exciting sound, they sound like the result of an unspeakably horrific unholy union between Gogol Bordello, Nick Cave, Bellowhead, and the Stray Cats but without the punk element, not pissed and with two female singers with stunning voices! The album itself consists of 10 tracks which although on the face of it seem quite upbeat conceal within their lyrics a mischievously dark theme, not least the fabulous ‘Bloodshed in the Woodshed’ and ‘Devil of Mine’ (watch the excellent and disturbing video
here). Remarkably assured and well polished for a debut I don’t know if it’ll reach into the nation’s collective conciousness but I love it!  4/5

I recently got a copy of this album and can honestly say it has blown me away. They were recommended by a friend and I’m eternally grateful to them. Like nothing I’ve heard before, but I’ve been humming these tunes to myself for days. I can’t believe this is a debut album.
