Punk Rock Ist Nicht Tot

In advance of their debut full length album, Isle of Dogs (April 9, 2012), east London indie poppers Tigercats are releasing a free MP3 download of “Full Moon Reggae Party”.

“Full Moon Reggae Party” was written in one day after an enforced absence from the studio, and recorded just a couple of days later. It’s about going on the run (“I heard you stole a van, we’ve got some fake Gaugin’s, let’s go and get the cash, dance to Two Sevens Clash”) but it’s also the most direct love song they’ve ever done. A lot of Tigercats’ lyrics are constructed out of fleeting, disconnected imagery, but “Full Moon Reggae Party” speaks straight to it’s subject. Unlike earlier songs, it was written by Duncan with Laura’s voice in mind: the exuberant verses that he sings solo contrast with the richness of the chorus.
“We love to play it because it’s fast and it’s about breaking the law.”

Catch Tigercats at London Popfest this Saturday, Feb 25th before they hit the road, touring UK (Feb/March) and Spain (April). They have also just been confirmed to play the Indietracks Festival at Midland Railway in Butterley, Derbyshire in July.

Tigercats’ album launch for Isle of Dogs will be March 30th at Power Lunches in Dalston.

Today’s video comes courtesy of one of our favourite indie quartets, the London based Skeletons On Holiday. The video for Night Of The Long Knives is a fantasy movie trailer, based around the idea of a superhero skateboarder.

“We wondered what the Dark Knight would’ve turned out like if he’d grown up skateboarding on the South Bank,” say the band, “and went from there.” Enjoy!

This self-titled debut EP from the reclusive Tatterattles (aka Folkestone’s Benjamin Fletcher) is a clever little bugger. Fletcher has the kind of fragile, tender voice that you would associate with simple lo-fi folk and on the surface that’s what you get. But it’s only when you listen a little closer that you realise how much is going on underneath. With the use of effects like loops and Theremins you never quite know where the songs are going to go next. With the nature of his voice, the songs have a melancholic feel to them but it’s a stunning, inventive collection of songs. If I had to pick a highlight it would be ‘Dead Letters’, perhaps because it’s the most conventional of the songs, though it too has its moments as it ends with Fletcher looping his own vocal to accompany himself.

The Cribs have announced details of their fifth album, ‘In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull’, which will be released on 7th May via Wichita Records. As a taster from the record you can now listen to or download brand new track ‘Chi-Town’ below). ‘In The Belly Of The Brazen Bull’ – the follow-up to 2009′s UK Top Ten album ‘Ignore The Ignorant’ – was recorded in upstate New York at Dave Fridmann’s Tarbox Road studio & in Chicago with engineer Steve Albini at his EAR studios. High Hopes is Mr Joe Ryan, who also hits things hard in FAIR OHS and creates sexy tunes in THE ONE.
As a young man growing up in the garden of England, Joe shared an equal love for punk/hardcore/metal as for the synth driven 80′s Soul that came from his parents stereo. High Hopes is his first solo excursion into this world of sex, synths and soul. To someone who is new to this music, it leans towards the modern stylings of John Maus and Ariel Pink mixed in with the obvious love of Jam & Lewis and SOS Band. Skewed synth pop love songs for lovers.

Electro-pop veterans New Order have been announced as the latest headliners for this year’s Bestival music event. The electro-pop veterans, famous for their hit Blue Monday, will play the Saturday night headliner slot at the event run by Radio 1 DJ Rob Da Bank on the Isle of Wight in September. Original bassist Peter Hook will not be performing with New Order, who reformed last year.

Elsewhere on the line-up Friendly Fires, Death In Vegas, Daughter, Drums Of Death, Zulu Winter and Django Django join Icelandic chill-rockers Sigur Ros who have already been announced as a UK festival exclusive along with The xx, Two Door Cinema Club, Justice, Orbital, Hot Chip, 2manydjs and De La Soul.

Speaking of getting New Order to play, Rob Da Bank said: “So I’ve got Blue Monday blaring out of the Bestival HQ office speakers as we unveil our iconic Saturday night headliner New Order. It doesn’t get better than that, but it does, True Faith, Bizarre Love Triangle, Fine Time, Regret, so many amazing records that I grew up listening to (and still listen to now) and they still sound immense, pioneering, legendary. See you down the front.”

Bestival runs from September 6th – 9th at Robin Hill Country Park, Isle of Wight.
