Album review: Clock Opera – Ways To Forget
I’ve been following London based Clock Opera with considerable interest ever since I was sent their debut single ‘Once and For All’ back in November last year. Three singles later and the album I’ve been waiting patiently for is finally here, and I’m pleased to announce that the wait has been worthwhile. A masterclass in art pop courtesy of main man Guy Connelly, ‘Ways To Forget’ is an album that has been created by deconstructing sounds from everyday objects; pots and pans, glass, lighters springs etc. and, with the aid of band mates Che, Dave and Andy, reassembling and reforming them into piano led pop anthems, with Guy’s urgent vocals topping them off perfectly. As you’d expect all the singles to date are present and correct, including the stunning ‘Lesson No 7’, but the album tracks are just as strong. ‘Man Made’ and the ‘Lost Buoys’ with their strong melodies, stand out in particular but there isn’t anything here I don’t like. Occasionally overblown and frequently pretentiousness it may be, and the influence of eighties art pop stalwarts Talk Talk and The Associates is clear, but nonetheless ‘Ways To Forget’ is a strong debut. 8/10
