Single Review: Tashaki Miyaki – Tashaki Miyaki EP

Tashaki MiyakiApart from a much blogged cover of the Everly Brothers, Tashaki Miyaki it’s surprisingly difficult to find information about Tashaki Miyaki, the Californian duo set the blogosphere alight. We can tell you that they have been widely compared to the Jesus and Mary Chain and from the moment lead track ‘Something Better than Nothing’ bursts through the speakers it’s obvious why. The reverb, bass-y drums and excessively fuzzy filters are pure Mary Chain, but the sweet female vocals and beautiful melodies that accompany them lift Tashaki Miyaki above accusations of being mere copycats. The other three tracks here and in particular ‘Get It Right’ which features the sultry female vocals cooing ‘you’re all I ever wanted/who will I love if I don’t have you’ are equally lovely. A stunning debut.

The band once again teamed up with Juan Iglesias for the video for ‘Get It Right’ after working with him on their previously on the Somethin’ Is Better Than Nothin’ video. With ‘Get It Right’, East meets West with its wild horses and vast landscapes, the video plays tribute to the American West while at the same time drawing inspiration from minimalistic Japanese imagery.
