Album Review: The Lovely Eggs – Cob Dominos
Lancaster’s The Lovely Eggs are one of those bands that could be described as a musician’s band; they have plenty of other bands/singers amongst their admirers (Eddie Argos probably the most vocal) but have never quite achieved critical success. Listening to ‘Cob Dominos’ it’s not totally surprising. The music is abrasive and fuzzy, the production distinctly lo-fi, and the unhinged vocals are defiantly shouted by a bratty Holly Ross in her Lancastrian accent. Sounds awful right? WRONG!
Abrasive and unhinged it may be, but with the limited instruments this duo have they make some amazingly melodic pop songs. Add to that the smart, funny and frequently odd lyrics (‘look at ‘er with her washing line smile… look at him with his sausage roll thumb’ - ‘Don’t Look At Me (I Don’t Like It)’) and they have something quite extraordinary. There’s loads of tracks here, they’re all pretty short – the whole album is only 36 mins long, and they’re all great! My personal highlights though would be the surprisingly gentle (at least it starts that way!) ‘Fuck It’, ‘Alphabet Song’ and ‘Panic Plant’, a brilliant song about OCD.
The Lovely Eggs are unique and completely mad, but they’re also special and a good example of what makes Britain great. Without eccentric nutters like The Lovely Eggs randomly shouting ‘People Are Twats’ it’d be a pretty mundane world we live in! 9/10
